“Through a Glass..." William Church Winery
The owners of William Church Winery were serving a tasting on Whidbey Island and I overheard them discussing the naming of their wines. The winery was named after their fathers, but they, in their words “were riffing on the Church” name and came up with their signature logo (a stained glass window) and names for their wines, i.e. Bishop’s Blend, 2 Spires, Bad Habit, etc. When they gave me permission to use one of their wines for this show, I too “riffed” on the church theme. I crafted a stained glass window based on their logo and did a painting of their bottle with the light coming through the stained glass and reflecting on their label. Thus the title “Through a glass...” which has a scriptural reference, a reference to the wine glass itself, and alludes to the light coming through the stained glass on to the label. And of course, red wine has traditionally had spiritually symbolic interpretations in Art.
