Yoko Hara
Yoko Hara was born in Japan in 1968. She is an exciting young artist who received her Masters degree in painting and printmaking from Musahino Art University, outside Tokyo. Since school, she has chosen to work in the etching medium, combining a variety of techniques such as aquatint and drypoint. In these delicate intaglio prints, the artist explores subtle themes that reveal an experienced and sophisticated eye.
She cites travels in Asia, books and films as inspirations for her unique nonrepresentaional prints. She says the resulting artwork represents a visual diary of the different experiences in her own life.
Whether it is the warmth of color, or the choice of design, the viewer is immediately drawn to her prints. Some may be confused by the titles Hara has given the images. Instead of using a one or two work title, most of her prints have lengthly, enigmatic names that incorporate lines of poetic verse or other sayings. One example is "When counting sheep, the ones which must be counted, are they black or white No.2". Such elliptical titles do not restrict the viewers' appreciation, but rather spark the imagination.
She is included in many public and private collections both in Asia and in the USA.
