Lincoln County sheriff, William Brady, walks, at center, with 4 of his deputies down the main street in Lincoln, New Mexico, on April 1, 1878.
As the men passed the Tunstall store, Billy the Kid and several other “Regulators” rose up from behind an adobe wall and fired their rifles into the quintet of lawmen. Brady and George Hindman were killed as the other lawmen dart for cover.
Although the Kid was only one of several men shooting, when the “Lincoln County War” ended, it was the Kid that was the marked man. The Kid was eventually put on trial for the killing of Brady while all the other assassins went free.
